Background of the Study

Parental health literacy plays a critical role in determining child health outcomes, as parents’ understanding of health-related information influences their decisions regarding healthcare and health behavior (Adewale et al., 2024). In Taraba State, a region with varying levels of educational attainment and access to healthcare, parental health literacy is particularly important in ensuring that children receive proper care, nutrition, and preventive health interventions. Research indicates that parents with higher health literacy are more likely to seek timely medical care, adhere to prescribed treatments, and engage in preventive health behaviors that improve child health outcomes (Akinyemi et al., 2023).

However, many parents in Taraba State face challenges such as limited education, low awareness of healthcare practices, and lack of access to health information, which may hinder their ability to make informed decisions for their children's health (Suleiman et al., 2023). This study aims to investigate the relationship between parental health literacy and child health outcomes in Taraba State, focusing on how parents' understanding of health information impacts the health of their children.

Statement of the Problem

In Taraba State, a significant portion of the population lacks adequate health literacy, which may be contributing to poor child health outcomes. This study seeks to examine how parental health literacy influences child health behaviors, healthcare utilization, and overall health outcomes in the state.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of parental health literacy in Taraba State.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between parental health literacy and child health outcomes.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving parental health literacy to enhance child health outcomes in Taraba State.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of parental health literacy in Taraba State?
  2. How does parental health literacy influence child health outcomes in Taraba State?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve parental health literacy and child health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Higher levels of parental health literacy are positively correlated with better child health outcomes in Taraba State.
  2. Parents with low health literacy are less likely to engage in preventive healthcare practices and more likely to delay seeking medical care for their children.
  3. Interventions aimed at improving parental health literacy will lead to improved child health outcomes in Taraba State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on parents of children in Taraba State, particularly those who have regular access to healthcare services. Data will be collected through surveys, interviews, and health record analysis. Limitations include the potential for variability in health literacy due to regional differences and potential biases in self-reported data.
